What is a Custom View
A Custom View is a pre-defined, or user-defined "List Definition". It specifies exactly what data you want to see, and what fields you want to see in the list. Custom View is most commonly used in customizing what you can quickly browse in a summary page of Customer/Contact/Opportunity/Case/...

The definition of a Custom View contains Name, Description, Type..., and most importantly, Row and Column definition.

Row definition determines the search criteria, i.e what data filter you want to apply, so that you can see the exact subset. Like "Show me all my competitors whose number of employees are larger than 300, and of which I'm on the sales team".

Column definition determines the fields you want to see, and the order in which they are displayed. For example in a view of "My Personal Email Buddies", you might want to display only the field of "Contact Name", and "Email". In another view, you might want to display "Contact Name", "Contact #", "Phone", "Address"... and so on.

Custom View definition are done in a very easy, intuitive user interface.
